NATO leaders gathered at Buckingham Palace for a reception during the summit in London. However, the lighthearted mood was quickly soured when footage emerged of Princess Anne, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, French President Emmanuel Macron, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Mark Rutte, the Prime Minister of the Netherlands, seemingly joking about Donald Trump. Financial Times reporter Sebastian Payne spoke to BBC Politics Live about the possible “problematic” ramifications of the video.

He told the panel: “That is the kind of moment that could really set off the American President because he wants to be respected and he wants to be admired.

“That you’ve got all the other world leaders standing there, essentially taking the mick out of him for this impromptu press conference then I think that is problematic.

“But clearly all the other world leaders, the NATO leaders, know he’s not a conventional president.

“They know he just goes off and does his own thing, and they’re acknowledging what everybody knows there. We saw this again at other summits he’s appeared at, like the G7.”

The four leaders, joined by Princess Anne, appeared to be speaking about Mr Trump delivering a 40-minute impromptu speech earlier in the day.

While the US President’s name is not mentioned, many commentators and social media users are convinced that is who the world leaders are talking about.

In the video, Mr Johnson can be heard saying to Mr Macron: “Is that why you were late?”

Mr Trudeau intervenes, saying: “He was late because he takes a 40-minute press conference off the top.”

Mr Macron then speaks and gestures animatedly, but his words are barely audible.

The Canadian leader can later be heard once again, seemingly speaking about the same person the group was discussing earlier.

He says: “You just watched his team’s jaws drop to the floor.”

Princess Anne’s face is covered and it isn’t clear whether she takes part in the conversation or if she is just politely listening to the guests.

President Trump was not amused, and told reporters the next day that Mr Trudeau is “two-faced”.

The American leader said: “Well, he’s two-faced. No, honestly Trudeau is a nice guy. I find him a very nice guy.

“But, you know the truth is that I called him out on the fact that he’s not paying 2 percent and I guess he’s not very happy about it. You were there, a few of you were there. He’s not paying 2 percent and he should be paying 2 percent.

“In Canada they have money and he should be paying 2 percent. So I called him out on that and I’m sure he wasn’t happy about it. But that’s the way it is.”
