In a ballot, Express readers were asked over their views on whether the party has lost and has moved away from its former heartlands. The poll posed the question: ‘Labour turns back on northern leave voters – do you agree they are now the party of champagne socialism?’.

Overwhelmingly, 4,240 (92 percent) out of 4,468 voted that the party had indeed become a party of champagne socialism.

Only 258 (six percent) voted that they didn’t agree while with just 74 (two percent) stated that they ‘don’t know’.

Commenting on the poll some readers questioned that the party had been never been anything else other than one for champagne socialists.

One user wrote: “Labour leaders have been champagne socialists for ages – just look at Blair for example.”

Another said: “Have they ever been anything but?

“You show me a socialist and I’ll show you a hypocrite.”

A third also said: “Of course they are, and have been since at least 1997!

“I’ll leave you to surmise and draw your conclusions.”

A fourth also said: “Labour turned its back on the north years ago it’s now the party for the people that eat avocado on toast for breakfast.

“And not a bacon sandwich!”

Other voters also referenced how Labour is losing heartlands and that traditional voters of the party will never vote for them again.

Moreover, some highlighted how the Brexit Party was now representing Leave voters.

One user said: “The Labour and Conservative Parties have deserted Wales the Midlands and the North and the only time they are Interested is when an election comes around.

“Vote for the Brexit Party and lets Change Politics and Our Country for Good!”

Another said: “Parts of our country are unrecognisable thanks to Labour, they won’t be getting my vote.”

One more said: “Absolutely they are – the days of Labour politicians who really cared about the working classes have long gone.”

Under Mr Corbyn, the Labour party has become more focused on the metropolitan areas and regions with high student populations.

Due to that, the Tories have targeted Labour strongholds in the Midlands and North.

With areas such as Bolsover, Dudley North and Newcastle-under-Lyme all strong Leave seats, the Tory party has targeted a swathe of constituencies which could turn Conservative.

Due to the threat on former Labour safe seats, last week it was reported that the Labour Party would change tact and pivot towards trying to save vulnerable heartlands in the north and Midlands according to The Guardian.

Speaking on the alleged change of strategy, Mr Corbyn said: “Our campaign is in every part of the country.

“I am travelling all around the country. I say the same thing at every place I go.

“I don’t have one message for one group.”
