Emmanuel Macron launched a new dog at the North Atlantic Treaty Organization following comments in which the French President labelled the 70-year-old alliance as “brain dead.” Arriving at the NATO Summit in Watford to mark the organisation’s anniversary, Mr Macron appeared unrepentant about his statement as he claimed he had spurred other leaders into action. Asked whether he still believed in his comments, the French President said: “Yes, absolutely. In fact, it allowed us to raise some crucial debates.”

“I think it was our responsibility to raise ambiguities that could be harmful, and to tackle a real strategic debate.

“It has started, I am satisfied.”

However, Mr Macron insisted the group had to address the “many issues” facing NATO to better understand which role the alliance will have over the coming years.

Writing in The Economist in November, Mr Macron claimed Europe is on “the edge of a precipice” and he urged the continent to start reconsidering its strategic role as a geopolitical power.
