The Shadow Foreign Secretary was discussing the US President’s intentions regarding the NHS when Matt Frei grilled her over Jeremy Corbyn’s tactics. After Mr Trump declared he had no interest in the health service, the Channel 4 News host asked Ms Thornberry if she had hoped he would “put his foot in his mouth” regarding the NHS.

Ms Thornberry said: “Yes, well, he has a somewhat loose relationship with the truth, doesn’t he?”

The Channel 4 News host asked: “You’re saying he is lying about that?”

The Labour politician continued: “I am just saying he may have been told some lines to speak and it may even be that he has agreed them with Boris Johnson as well but frankly nobody believes either of them.

“He says I don’t even know how it came up.

“The reason it came up is because the last time he was here he said that the NHS was on the table.

“Now he says he doesn’t want it on a silver platter.”

Mr Frei replied: “But you were hoping that Donald Trump, by putting his foot in it somewhere, would save your election campaign a week and a half before the election.

“He’s not doing that for you, is he?”

The Shadow Foreign Secretary said: “I don’t agree with the premise of the question.

“We don’t need Donald Trump to save us, thank you very much.

“What we need is to be able to convince people on the doors that they should give us the opportunity to serve and transform our country.

“Donald Trump has how much longer in this country, he’s got long enough frankly and he’s got his Twitter.”

The Channel 4 News host asked: “You’re hoping that he will say something incriminating?”

Ms Thornberry responded: “I have no idea how long he is going to be able to maintain any discipline.”

According to the latest MRP poll, the Tories will end up with a total of 359 seats, followed by Labour with 211 and the Lib Dems in third with 13 seats.

The results will be particularly devastating for the Labour Party if they manifest, seeing its seat share drop from 262 seats in the 2017 election, a 51-seat loss.
