Mr Grant posted a short video on the People’s Vote twitter feed and linked it to tactical voting website stopboris.com. In the video, the actor says: “I passionately believe that anyone who cares about this country has to at this point activate themselves, get off their a*** and do everything they can to make everyone they know vote tactically at this election.”

But his intervention sparked a backlash among voters on social media.

Twitter user David Dent replied: “Oh sod off Hugh Grant. I supported Remain but have had a gutful of the referendum result being usurped, and the abuse of the working class and elderly voters in particular.”

David Archibald said: “Completely agree – I voted Remain but we lost so accept it – and to hear luvvie-in-chief Grant droning on makes me despair.”

Mr Grant early courted controversy when he accused the Liberal Democrats of lying, just a few days after joining the party on the General Election campaign trail.

The Love Actually actor surprised voters in London’s Finchley and Golders Green constituency as he knocked doors with candidate Luciana Berger on Saturday.

The party then tweeted saying it was “so great” to see the actor campaigning for the party, adding: “Only the Lib Dems can take seats off the Tories – and together we can stop Boris and Stop Brexit.”

The actor said the latter claim was “not true” and insisted he advocates tactical voting to unseat as many Conservatives as possible.
