A video shared on social media shows the Health Secretary being heckled at the campaign event in West Suffolk this weekend. Angry Labour supporters in the audience booed and shouted “liar” in chaotic scenes as one man tried to take Mr Hancock’s microphone.

In his speech, the Health Secretary said: “There is one thing that I am more passionate about ridding from our politics than anything else and that is the anti-Semitic and racist attitude of Jeremy Corbyn.”

The video prompted a strong reaction on social media.

Daniel Sugarcane, a public affairs officer for the Board of Deputies of British Jews, tweeted: “I’ve seen many Jews extremely angry at Labour candidates at hustings so far this election campaign.

“I haven’t seen anything CLOSE to the vitriol the Tory candidate for West [Suffolk] gets here for just mentioning Labour antisemitism. The cries of ‘liar’.

“The people responsible for this are those who have denied this antisemitism problem, called it a smear, falsely claimed it was being done to ‘silence criticism of Israel’, & those who have shared such lies.

“You’ve whipped up this mob against us. We will never forgive you for it.”

Mr Hancock replied: “Thanks Daniel. It was so sad. Thankfully it was only a dozen or so organised Labour activists.

“The rest of the room was appalled. Shows the depths of this evil in Labour. Awful for our democracy.”

Stephen Pollard, the editor of The Jewish Chronicle, tweeted: “I’ve watched this video many times now. And each time I do., I find it chilling.

“This is what Corbyn and his allies have unleashed, And even if/when he goes, it won’t…”

Barrister Rupert Myers added: “Who would be a politician?

“Whatever you think of Matt Hancock he has the right – surely – to be heard without being treated like this: how can we expect anyone remotely sane to go into politics if we stand by and let this sort of thing happen?”

It comes as Mr Corbyn said he is “very sorry” for “everything that has happened” in his party regarding anti-Semitism in an interview with ITV’s This Morning.

The Labour leader faced a backlash last week for refusing four times to apologise during an interview with BBC veteran Andrew Neil.

Pressed on the issue today, Mr Corbyn said: “Our party and me do not accept anti-Semitism in any form… obviously I’m very sorry for everything that has happened.

“But I want to make this very clear: I am dealing with it, I have dealt with it, other parties are also affected by anti-Semitism.

“Candidates have been withdrawn by the Liberal Democrats, and the Conservatives and by us because of it. We just do not accept it in any form whatsoever.”

President of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, Marie van der Zyl, said Mr Corbyn has not “dealt” with anti-Semitism in his party.

She said: “In an appearance on ITV, after again being asked five times for an apology on his party’s inability to deal with the anti-Semitism in its ranks, Mr Corbyn finally said he was ‘very sorry for everything that has happened’, but immediately added ‘I am dealing with it. I have dealt with it. Other parties are also affected by anti-Semitism.

“Thousands of complaints have been made to Labour about cases of anti-Semitism from members; the 130 open cases often cited ignores many cases in which members were let off with a slap on the wrist for the most egregious anti-Semitism.

“Mr Corbyn has not dealt with it in the past few years; whether he will deal with it now remains to be seen.

“While we can and do criticise cases of anti-Semitism from other parties when these arise, we would resist any attempt to deflect from Labour’s anti-Semitism problem by claiming that any serious rival party has the same issue with Jew-hate.

“When it comes to anti-Semitism, no other mainstream party in British society has anything close to Labour’s current problem.”
