Seven politicians, including five party leaders, joined the ITV debate on Sunday evening. Labour’s Richard Burgon criticised other politicians for being prepared to use Trident but also said his party would be renewing the programme because it is seen as a deterrent. Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage slammed the Labour Party for wasting money on a nuclear weapon they would never be prepared to use.

Mr Burgon said: “I find it really troubling in a general election campaign where politicians are asked yes or no answer would you press the button and Politicians smirk and say yes I would press the button.

“I can’t envisage killing and being prepared to kill millions of innocent people would do to protect or make safe the British people.”

Mr Burgon responded: “I think that politicians should stop boasting about their willingness to kill millions of innocent people just because they think it will get them a few extra votes.”

The Brexit Party leader then asked: “Why waste the money on Trident if you’re not prepared to use it?

“If you’re never going to use it don’t waste the money on Trident.

“Come on make your mind up.”

The Labour representative said: “My own views on the use of Trident are well known the same as Jeremy Corbyn’s but the Labour Party’s democratic decided policy is to keep Trident as a deterrent.

“Not as something to boast about in election debates about being willing to press the button.”

Mr Farage quipped: “To have a deterrent that you’d never use?”

During the same debate, Mr Farage stunned Ms Sturgeon during a heated Brexit row with the Brexit Party leader leaving some members of the ITV audience in hysterics as they burst out laughing before breaking into applause.

Responding to the Scottish First Minister, Mr Farage said: “Brexit is going to be a great thing for the country Nicola, it is going to give us independence, I thought you liked independence?

“We are going to be a free nation, catch our own fish.”

Some members of the audience started laughing as the SNP leader snapped back at Mr Farage.

She said: “If Scotland was independent, we wouldn’t be getting dragged out of the European Union against our will.”
