Nicholas Watt of BBC Newsnight explained that there is a very sour atmosphere developing between the UK and Brussels. He explained that Jean-Claude Juncker has insisted that a no deal Brexit would cause the “collapse” of the United Kingdom. Mr Watt also went on to explain that in the next weeks there will be pushes to have a second referendum on the Brexit question.

The BBC political editor said: “In a sign of the really sour atmosphere there was a very interesting intervention from Jean-Claude Juncker who is the president of the European Commission.

“He has told L’Echo, the Belgian newspaper, according to our BBC colleague Andrew Neil that if there is a no deal Brexit the fault would lie in the British camp.

“Then Jean-Claude Juncker said this: a Brexit without an agreement would lead to the collapse of the United Kingdom.

“Now there is a feeling in Brussels that if there is a no deal there will be an extension.

“This is because the act named after Hilary Benn would kick in and it is very difficult for the Prime Minister to get out of that.

“The question is, how long would that be?

“Some people are saying it could be very short and some are saying it could be until the summer to allow a referendum.

“Because it looks like there is going to be a big push next week to get a referendum on the statute book.

“So there are high stakes as we head towards the deadline.”

The European Commission President insisted Brussels bureaucrats would be completely innocent of any wrongdoing.

He also said failing to reach an agreement could mean that the UK and EU enjoy a “less intimate” relationship than the bloc does with Canada.

In a scathing intervention, Mr Juncker added: “I do not accept this ‘blame game’ of pinning the eventual failure of the negotiations on the EU.

“If that’s the case, the explanation is actually in the British camp because the original sin is on the islands and not on the Continent.

“Nobody would come out a winner in this scenario. A no-deal Brexit would lead to a collapse of the UK and a clear weakening of the roots of growth on the Continent.”
