The European Commission President insisted Brussels bureaucrats would be completely innocent of any wrongdoing. He also said failing to reach an agreement could mean that the UK and EU enjoy a “less intimate” relationship than the bloc does with Canada. In a scathing intervention, Mr Juncker said: “I do not accept this ‘blame game’ of pinning the eventual failure of the negotiations on the EU.

“If that’s the case, the explanation is actually in the British camp because the original sin is on the islands and not on the Continent.

“Nobody would come out a winner in this scenario. A no deal Brexit would lead to a collapse of the UK and a clear weakening of the roots of growth on the Continent.”

The chief eurocrat’s remarks came on the same day that Angela Merkel told the Prime Minister Northern Ireland must remain in “full alignment forever” with the EU during a tetchy phone call.

A Number 10 source said the German Chancellor made clear that a “deal is overwhelmingly unlikely”.

The official added: “She thinks the EU has a veto on us leaving the customs union.

“Merkel said that if Germany wanted to leave the EU they could do it no problem but the UK cannot leave without leaving Northern Ireland behind in a customs union and in full alignment forever.”

In a diplomatic blitz, Mr Johnson also held talks with Irish premier Leo Varadkar and EU Parliament president David Sassoli.

The Italian parliament chief said the Prime Minister’s Brexit offer is unacceptable and must decide between offering concessions, no deal or delaying the UK’s departure again.

EU Council President Donald Tusk waded into the row with an angry outburst on Twitter aimed directly at the Prime Minister.

The European Council President wrote: “Boris Johnson, what’s at stake is not winning some stupid blame game.

“At stake is the future of Europe and the UK as well as the security and interests of our people. You don’t want a deal, you don’t want an extension, you don’t want to revoke.”

He ended the Tweet with the Latin phrase “Quo vadis” meaning: “Where are you going?”

A Downing Street spokesman said: “Both sides strongly reiterated their desire to reach a Brexit deal. They hope to meet in person later this week.”

DUP leader Arlene Foster accused Dublin and Brussels of trying to “trap” Northern Ireland in a customs union.

She said: “The comments from the German Chancellor to the Prime Minister that Northern Ireland must remain in the EU Customs Union forever now reveal the real objective of Dublin and the European Union.

“For the United Kingdom to be asked to leave a part of its sovereign territory in a foreign organisation of which the UK would no longer be a part and over which we would have no say whatsoever is beyond crazy.

“No UK Government could ever concede such a surrender.

“The EU is not interested in a negotiated outcome at this time. Their position is the UK can only leave with a deal if it agrees a binding piece of international law permanently tying either the whole country or a part of it to the EU’s legal order over which it has no control.

“The true purpose of the ‘backstop’ is now in the open for all to see.

“Those who eagerly supported the backstop as the best of both worlds can now see the error of that assessment. It was neither temporary nor an insurance policy.”
