The Conservative MP claimed Mrs Merkel just wants the UK to stay in the custom union and single market as he went on to add she hasn’t denied it. His comments come as Mr Johnson handed the EU his Brexit deal proposals which included compromises between the UK and the EU. The Prime Minister and Leo Varadkar will told a critical Brexit summit this week in a final push to agree on a deal.

Speaking on Sky News, Mr Redwood said: “It sounded very final but of course it was just one Government.

“One very important politician who does often speak for the European Union although often doesn’t bother to ask the other member states what they think about things.

“The EU official line is still that the talks go on and that things go to schedule.

“Mrs Merkel in her very damning remarks basically said that we have to stay in the customs union or that northern Ireland must stay and in the single market.

“I would have thought Mrs Merkel would have denied it instantly if it was completely false and she hasn’t.

“It looks as if that’s the German view and clearly Mrs Merkel is using this to try and get the other member states into line with the German view as she usually does.”

Ms Merkel told Mr Johnson on the phone on Tuesday morning that a Brexit deal with the the EU was “overwhelmingly unlikely”.

A Government source said the call was a “clarifying moment” and that if it represents “a new established position, then it means a deal is essentially impossible not just now but ever”.

Michael Hewson, chief market strategist at CMC Markets, said: “The pound has taken a lurch lower as reports say there is no prospect of a deal.

“It’s reacting to the newsflow which is negative. But at some point it has to react to the reality which is that there will be an extension and elections.”

With 23 days before the UK due to leave the bloc, there is no sign the impasse between London and Brussels could be bridged and both sides are jostling to avoid blame for a delay or a disorderly no deal Brexit.

Mr Johnson last week sent a proposal to Brussels to replace the Irish border “backstop” – an insurance policy to keep the border open between the Republic of Ireland and the province of Northern Ireland – which has been rebuffed by EU leaders.

European Council President Tusk accused Mr Johnson of playing “some stupid blame game” after Downing Street claimed the EU had made a Brexit deal “impossible”.

Downing Street sources claimed Mrs Merkel had made clear that an agreement was now “overwhelmingly unlikely”.

Following a telephone call with Mr Johnson, she was said to have insisted the Irish must have a veto over Northern Ireland leaving the customs union.

A Number 10 source said Mrs Merkel had told the Prime Minister that the UK could not leave the EU without leaving Northern Ireland behind in a customs union with the EU.
