Parliament was suspended this evening ahead of the Queen’s Speech on Monday, which will allow the Prime Minister to set out his domestic agenda and reveal what legislation his government will try and pass in the new parliament. The Commons chamber appeared to contain approximately 30 MPs, who were led out by Mr Bercow. The Speaker will not stay for long when Parliament resumes though, as he will step down by the Brexit deadline of October 31.

But to mark the end of his term, he spoke to CNN to share his version of events, particularly over the recent Brexit chaos.

He insisted he had always remained impartial in his role, despite hardline Brexiteer MPs insisting he is biased towards them.

Mr Bercow said: “I wouldn’t say I’m a remainer enabler.

“I would say that I’m an enabler of all colleagues across the House who want to express their different points of view.”

He added Brexiteers were just “bad losers”.

He said: “If you are losing the match, it’s quite bad form to blame the referee.

“I thought the Brexiteers were in favor of taking back control of Parliament being in the driving seat?

“Well, they can’t have it both ways.”

Mr Bercow admitted the bitter arguments in the Commons were some of the worst he had seen in his 22-year career in Parliament.

But he said he would defend the right of MPs to hold the UK government to account “no matter how much cheap abuse, calumny and vituperation are directed to Parliament.”

He said. “I’m entirely unmoved by some of the more downmarket attacks on Parliament that have been launched in recent times.

“They are unworthy, they don’t amount to a row of beans, and I’m not tall intimidated by them.”

He also shot down speculation that he could lead a caretaker government if Mr Johnson was forced to resign over the coming weeks.

He said during the interview: “I don’t think anybody would seriously think that that is the likely resolution of this matter.

“If you are saying, am I sitting by my phone and thinking people are going to come to me and say John! Rescue us from the imbroglio!

“The answer is I expect nothing of the sort, and I’m looking for nothing of the sort, and I am in fact very much looking forward instead to leaving the speakership and Parliament within a matter of weeks from now.”

Mr Bercow added opposition MPs’ anti-no-deal legislation is “the most logical consequence if a deal isn’t agreed”.

This is despite Mr Johnson repeatedly calling it “the Surrender Bill”.

He also told CNN Parliament doesn’t want to punish the UK by crashing out of the EU without a deal.
