Tony Blair spoke out against the Brexit voter after being a vocal supporter of the European project throughout his leadership of the United Kingdom. Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage took a pop at the former Labour leader during a packed rally in Mr Blair’s former constituency in Sedgefield, claiming the former Prime Minister contributed to turning the UK into a “laughing stock” with his opposition to Brexit. Addressing supporters in the County Durham town, Mr Farage said: “People have asked me, ‘why are you going to Sedgefield?’ I’ll give you a couple of very good reasons.

“One of them is called Tony Blair who, of course, was your much respected local MP, wasn’t he? Tony Blair sums up why this country finds itself in the crisis that it is in today.

“Tony Blair sums up why we are the nation now being viewed, across the world, as a laughing stock.”

Mr Farage continued: “For democracy to work, you have to have the principle of losers’ consent – you back a side in an election and if you lose, you don’t like it, you accept it.

“Because that is what democracy is and it’s the system that so many of those generations who went before us in the 20th century fought two world wars for so that we could live in liberty and in that freedom.

“Democracy is a mean so that we can disagree with people, perhaps heatedly, but respect the fact that other people are entitled to have their point of view.”

The Brexit Party leader added: “Respect the fact that, if the other side wins, an election or a referendum, you simply have to accept it because those are the rules.

“Blair has frankly been at the head, along with others of course – like John Major, now nearly all the frontbench of the Labour Party, the Lib Dems, the SNP – of a group who has simply refused to accept the result of the referendum.

“They have done whatever they can, since 2016, to frustrate, to delay, to obstruct and to use shenanigans and behaviour in parliament that devalue everything our democracy has stood for for centuries.”

Tony Blair on Wednesday was claimed to be “pulling the strings” in the ongoing Labour Party and Liberal Democrats alliance alongside former EU Commissioner Peter Mandelson.

A source claimed: “Blair and Mandelson are pulling the strings.

“Mandelson is the puppet master, he has had meetings via proxy with all the parties involved in the Remain alliance and sends emails with ideas.

“Blair’s people have been speaking with Jo Swinson‘s people.”

Another source also claimed Mr Blair’s former special adviser Lance Price held meetings with Ms Swinson’s staff, even though the Lib Dem leader was not there in person.

The former adviser said on Tuesday he was “not directly involved” with the Remain alliance.

Mr Price said: “I’m just an interested observer”.

Ms Swinson announced this week the Lib Dems would campaign for Article 50 to be revoked at the next election.

A Lib Dem source said: “She’s trying to create clear yellow water between her and Labour now that Labour are backing Remain.

“She wants to be seen as the paramilitary wing of Remain because internal polling and focus groups have shown that the Lib Dems are losing a bit of ground to Labour on the issue.

“She doesn’t want the party to be squeezed out by the two main parties. She thinks that a Corbyn’s unelectability, the uncertainty around Brexit and the current parliamentary arithmetic could result in it all falling into her lap.”
