After Parliament was suspended on Monday night, Boris Johnson met with his Cabinet yesterday to bring them up to speed on how his negotiations with the EU were progressing.

On Monday a bill blocking a no deal Brexit on October 31 received Royal Assent.

In a move which hamstrung the Prime Minister’s negotiation with the EU, MPs and peers in the Lords voted last week to outlaw the UK leaving the block on October 31 unless a withdrawal deal was approved in Parliament.

However, Mr Johnson has continued to say he will refuse to ask the EU to delay Brexit any further while also vowing to abide by the rule of law.

Revealing what the Prime Minister told his Cabinet yesterday, ITV political correspondent Robert Peston wrote on Twitter: “Downing St sources, corroborated by ministers, tell me Boris Johnson reiterated at cabinet today he would not negotiate delay in Brussels on 17-18 October and his goal is unchanged by the law passed by Parliament — that is to leave on 31 October with a deal if possible but without if necessary.

“Johnson said that what he will do on 19 October, when the new law would force him to sign a letter requesting a delay, ‘will only be clearer very near the time’.

“But No.10 sources continue to emphasise that they intend to ‘sabotage’ extension.

“Extraordinary choice of word ‘sabotage’.

“When has a prime minister ever before engaged in “sabotage”. But this PM and his chief aide Dominic Cummings are – to put it mildly – different from their predecessors.”
