The Speaker and MPs were asked to attend the closing ceremony of the Parliamentary session following the five-week prorogation until October 14. Mr Bercow, a prominent Remainer, said he will stand down from his role on the current Brexit deadline October 31. In the early hours of Tuesday morning ahead of the prorogation, Mr Bercow interrupted to say: “Wait a minute, I couldn’t care less whether you like it or not. People have got the basic tolerance and manners to listen.”

He later said: “I don’t require any assistance from you Mr Stevenson, you wouldn’t have the foggiest idea on where to start in seeking to counsel me – I require no response from you, I require no response from you young man.

“Get out man, you will not be missed.”

Mr Bercow later lashed out at another MP, saying he couldn’t give a “flying flamingo” on what their view is.

As Mr Bercow left his chair in the formal suspension, Remainers could be heard shouting “shame on you” at Conservative MPs.

Labour MPs praised Mr Bercow and shook his hand as he left.

Mr Bercow said: “I will play my part, this is not, however, a normal prorogation, it is not typical, it is not standard.

“It’s one of the longest for decades and it represents not just in the minds of many colleagues but huge numbers of people outside, an act of executive fiat.

“Therefore, I quite understand, I’ve already said that Black Rod, I respect and Black Rod is doing her duty and the Queen’s Commissioners are doing their duty and I will play my part.”

Labour MPs also protested the prorogation as they held up signs in Commons with the word “silenced”.

Mayhem in Commons also sparked a scuffle between MPs next to Mr Bercow’s chair as he shouted down a Tory MP.
