The fierce altercation took place this afternoon on Sky News as Guido Fawkes’ Tom Harwood and Our Future Our Choice’s Phoebe Potter descended into a vicious debate, leading Mr Harwood to hit back against “British people on TV” doing “the EU’s work for them.” Ms Potter had said: “Things like the backstop are put in there to protect UK citizens. We actually saw a very recent poll saying the majority of people in Northern Ireland are pro the backstop because it so crucially protects their open border and the Good Friday Agreement.

“And that’s absolutely something that we should not be putting at risk without going back to the people first and seeing if they actually want to do it.”

But the youthful commentator fired back: “The backstop itself risks the Good Friday Agreement, which is based on absolute, fundamental principles of the integrity of the UK.

“It’s important that we look at this from both sides.

“And I think it’s so, so sad when British people pop up on TV and start spewing the EU’s lines.

“This is a negotiation; one side says one thing, the other side another.

“And it’s profoundly damaging to the British national interest when Brits pop up on TV and start doing the EU’s work for them.

“It’s time that we all work together.”

Ms Potter said she had every right to her opinion and Mr Harwood should back a second referendum if he really wanted to hear what the British had to say.

The irate pair also clashed over the leaked report on the Government’s no deal mitigation plan Operation Yellowhammer.

Mr Harwood claimed the plan was intended to be a worst-case scenario document, adding: “You’re looking at an old report based on a worst-case scenario and with no planning.

“This will bear no reality to the situation the country will actually face when we leave the EU on the 31st October.”

Tory grandee Ken Clarke and senior Labour MP Harriet Harman are both prepared to lead an emergency government to prevent a no deal Brexit, according to the Liberal Democrat leader Jo Swinson.

Ms Swinson said she has spoken to the pair – who are Father and Mother of the House – and won their assurances they are ready to “put public duty first” to “stop us driving off that cliff”.

The veteran MPs are Ms Swinson’s suggestion as an alternative to Jeremy Corbyn, who has proposed becoming caretaker PM to prevent no deal under Boris Johnson.

The Labour leader has appealed to opposition leaders and Tory rebels to back his plan to bring down the Government with a no-confidence vote, extend the Brexit deadline beyond October 31 and force a snap general election.

The SNP, Plaid Cymru and Tory MP Guto Bebb have all signalled they could support the plan.

But the Lib Dems swiftly dismissed it, saying Mr Corbyn was the wrong person for the job and instead suggested the longest continuously serving male and female MPs for the task.

Ms Swinson told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “I have been in touch with them because obviously you don’t just mention people’s names without checking that they’re OK with that.

“They put public duty first, and they don’t want to see a no-deal Brexit, and if the House of Commons asks them to lead an emergency government to get our country out of this Brexit mess and to stop us driving off that cliff to a no deal, then yes, they are prepared to do that and I think that is to their credit.”
