The outgoing European Commission President, who is coming to the end of his term, had been on a break in Austria. The European Union‘s executive said in a statement: “Jean-Claude Juncker had to shorten his holiday in Austria for medical reasons. “He was taken back to Luxembourg where he will undergo an urgent cholecystectomy (surgical removal of the gallbladder).
The removal of the gallbladder is a routine procedure, according to the NHS website, and is often performed when people develop painful gallstones.
The procedure is relatively straightforward, but can sometimes take many weeks for patients to return to normal daily activities.
Mr Juncker is in the final months of his five-year term as European commission President, and has been central in the Brexit process since Britain’s referendum on EU membership in June 2016.
He will be replaced by German conservative Ursula von der Leyen on November 1 – the day after Britain is set to leave the European Union.
She will become the first woman to lead the institution that proposes EU laws, polices the economies of all members of the bloc and negotiates trade deals around the world.
Mr Juncker, a former Luxembourg premier, had been scheduled to attend the G7 summit of EU leaders in Biarritz, France next weekend.
Leaders are expected to discuss global challenges in the economy and the environment, as well as rising tensions in Iran, Russia and North Korea.
Boris Johnson will attend his first major summit as Prime Minister, with Brexit and the possibility of the UK leaving the EU without a deal on October 31 likely to be discussed.
