Remainer backtrack: Unearthed video reveals Philip Hammond’s shock no deal Brexit claim

The video is from 2016 and simply records a moment in Parliament where he insisted the UK’s exit from the EU would be “automatic”. Mr Hammond explained that the UK had two years to negotiate a deal with the EU but failing that, the UK would then leave automatically from the bloc, essentially a no-deal Brexit. He said: “At the end of that two years there is no guarantee that an agreement will have been reached.

“But our exit would be automatic unless every single one of the remaining member states were to agree to an extension of the negotiating period. “

But earlier this week Mr Hammond told Boris Johnson that leaving the EU without a deal would be a betrayal of the referendum result.

The former chancellor leads a group of 20 Conservative MPs who have made clear their opposition to a no-deal Brexit come October 31.

In addition to this, it is understood that the former political opponents Hammond and Starmer have agreed to work together through the summer recess with other Parliamentarians who oppose no deal.

Former Prime Minister David Cameron has also come under fire for seemingly going against his comments made in 2016 regarding a no-deal Brexit.

In the aftermath of Theresa May failing to pass her Brexit deal through Parliament in March Mr Cameron reflected on what he believed needed to happen next.
