The Prime Minister will be grilled by viewers for 10 minutes on his plans for the future of Britain during a live Q&A session on Facebook. The showdown will take Mr Johnson out of his comfort zone of the House of Commons and head-to-head with British voters online. The off-the-cuff interview will be a stern test for the Prime Minister who is renowned for going off script – so expect fireworks.

Number 10 officials are understood to be concerned the event may turn into a car-crash with another Q&A yet to be scheduled.

An adviser to Mr Johnson said: “Let’s, erm, see how this one goes.”

However others have welcomed the move and denied he is following the lead by the US President Donald Trump.

A source close to Mr Johnson told The Telegraph: “This isn’t like Trump because Trump hides from the mainstream media whereas Boris is constantly out and about doing walkabouts.

“This is about doing something simple and direct.”

The new strategy by Number 10 is a clear indication of the influence of Mr Johnson’s senior advisor Dominic Cummings.

The mastermind of the 2016 Vote Leave campaign is a keen advocate of data and the use of social media to reach voters.
