German car manufacturer BMW has said tens of thousands of electric Minis have been preordered and the firm are set to start manufacturing in its Oxford branch on November 1 – just one day after Brexit. The car will be available from March 2020 and is predicted to see in significant quantities. Elena Eder, Project Manager of the E-Mini, has conceded Brexit may be a “disruptive factor” but she said they are prepared “for all eventualities”.

Production works are due to start from the beginning of November, just one day after the Brexit deadline.

Ms Eder acknowledges Brexit may be a stumbling block and said: “Brexit is a disruptive factor.

“Whatever happens, we are ready for all eventualities.

“It does not knock us down, by now it has been talked about for so long that we are prepared for all eventualities.”

Graham Biggs, a UK based BMW director, said the November start date had been planned years in advance and “long before the Brexit deadline reset”.

But he said the car manufacture would “have to work around” any potential disruption caused by a no deal Brexit.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has pledged to leave the EU “come what may” on October 31 and last week he stepped up threats to leave the bloc without a deal.
