Brexiteer MP Iain Duncan Smith has condemned the belief that the EU and UK can be friends after Brexit. In a sign that Boris Johnson’s Government is not backing down from its hardline position, Mr Smith blamed Theresa May for treating Brussels like a friend. Speaking on BBC’s HardTalk, the Tory politician, who managed Mr Johnson’s leadership campaign, said that the EU had been aggressive in Brexit talks – while Britain had tried to satisfy their demands.

He told the BBC: “The failure of Brexit goes back to the way that Theresa May and her government treated the negotiations

“I don’t blame the EU. If I was them, I would have behaved in the same way.

“They do a lot of trade deals, they know exactly how to operate.

“They treat you immediately as a third country. They are always very aggressive – that’s what they do.”
