Fifty migrants intercepted in the Channel with some paddling in canoes in bid to reach Britain

AROUND 50 migrants were intercepted in the Channel yesterday — some paddling canoes to try to reach Britain.

Coastguard vessels working with Border Force officers and police stopped a mini- flotilla of small vessels during the morning.

Up to 50 migrants were caught trying to cross the channel yesterday and were transferred to Dover Western Docks[/caption]

Those on board were transferred to Dover Western Docks to be processed. A total of 1,026 migrants have been stopped in the Channel since the start of last November.

HM Coastguard said: “We’ve been coordinating a search and rescue response off Kent.

“Our only concern is the preservation of life, rescuing those in trouble and bringing them safely back to shore.”

The Home Office said the Border Force dealt with “a number of small boat incidents”. Yesterday’s influx follows the arrival of 47 migrants last weekend — 37 of them said to be Iraqi and Iranian.
