Ms Huebner, who is a member of the European Parliament’s Brexit Steering Group, laughed off the Prime Minister’s “tactic” as “absolutely obvious”. She believed Mr Johnson is attempting to convince Britons that leaving the European Union without an agreement is a “necessity”. Her admission came as part of a growing frustration in Brussels that the Government is not willing to engage in negotiations to avoid a no-deal scenario.

Writing on Twitter, Ms Huebner said: “Boris Johnson is trying to create a feeling in the UK of a no-deal necessity.

“It is absolutely obviously that the no deal option is a tactic. Sorry to say, it will not work.”

EU officials and diplomats gathered in Brussels on Monday for the last time before their summer break.

After their meeting, they accepted that Britain will most likely leave without a deal and Mr Johnson “isn’t bluffing”.
