The high-ranking diplomat was speaking on the day UK foreign secretary Dominic Raab met Donald Trump, with Mr Raab later claiming US President had demonstrated a “huge appetite” for a bumper deal. Speaking alongside Mr Raab, Mr Pompeo said: “We support the United Kingdom’s sovereign choice,  however Brexit ultimately shakes out, and we’ll be on the doorstep, pen in hand, ready to sign a new free trade agreement at the earliest possible time.” Mr Raab, who was in the White House to meet Vice President Mike Pence, told reporters he had had a “preliminary chat” with Mr Trump covering a range of issues from security to trade.

He added: “He called me into the Oval Office. He was effusive in his warmth for the United Kingdom.

“It’s amazing to hear an American president talk about our country in such warm terms.

“He expressed his high regard for Boris Johnson as a Prime Minister.

Mr Raab also said the UK was “absolutely resolved” to be out of the EU by October 31, adding: “If the EU’s position is that there can be no change to the Withdrawal Agreement, then that will be a choice that they’ve made.”
