Toby Young wrote in his Daily Telegraph column that John McDonnell’s refusal to countenance such a plan meant a general election was the only chance that anti-Brexiteers had. Under the terms of the Fixed Term Parliament Act, should Boris Johnson lose a vote of no confidence, it would not immediately result in a general election, as the Tories or an alternative Government would have 14 days to win an explicit vote of confidence.
