Brexit warning: Tory MPs plead for Farage’s mercy over fears Corbyn could get into power

Leave.EU founder Arron Banks claims “at least 10” Conservative MPs have asked him to persuade Mr Farage not to stand candidates in their constituencies. There is fear in Tory ranks that a split Brexit vote will lead to a Jeremy Corbyn-led Government and the country staying in the EU.

Brexiteer Tory Chris Davies lost his seat in the Brecon and Radnorshire by-election to the Lib Dems by 1,425 votes last week after 3,331 people backed the Brexit Party.

Brexit Party MEPs are calling on the Conservatives to come forward with an offer of an electoral pact.

Nigel Farage wants the Conservatives not to field candidates in Labour-held Leave-voting seats such as Normanton, Pontefract and Castleford, which is today held by Yvette Cooper.

Mr Banks said: “The Brexit Party will be hungrily eying up Labour seats in the industrial north, the Midlands and Wales. I have never seen Nigel so determined and excited by the prospect.”

There is concern that pro-Remain parties will band together at the next election to keep out Brexiteers. Plaid Cymru and the Greens decided not to field candidates in Brecon and Radnorshire to give Lib Dem victor Jane Dodds a clear shot at victory.
