Morning Brexit Update… 16 April 19

Morning everyone,

As Paris mourns the burning of Notre-Dame, you’ll be forgiven for regarding Brexit as an insignificant drop in the ocean for now.

Theresa May, currently on holiday in Wales, contacted French President Emmanuel Macron shortly after 8p.m. and later added that her ‘’thoughts are with the French people’’.

Away from the French capital, *Donald Tusk* has this morning hinted at a further Brexit delay as he told the ‘’exhausted’’ 🇪🇺 and the UK 🇬🇧 to resist the temptation to just ‘’get it over with’’ out of frustration.

The President of the European Council also suggested it was his ‘’dream’’ that Britain would stay in the bloc.

And looking ahead to European elections🗳, more than 3,000 people have applied to stand as Change UK candidates. The party’s 11 MPs will meet this weekend to try to whittle down a shortlist.

There are more forecasts (this time from the Guardian) that the Tory party are set to lose half of their 18 MEPs in the European elections next month. One MEP told the Guardian’s Rowan Mason that the party is growing increasingly concerned about defections to the Brexit party and Change UK.

And while we’re on the subject of elections, *Tom Harris has argued that choosing who will fight the next election will be the most important decision Tory grassroots ever take🤨*:
